The closest and finest hill settlement to Mumbai, Matheran is an eco-friendly hill station and attracts lakhs of tourists every year. Matheran is located around 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Mumbai  and is around two hours from Mumbai, by road. Matheran is a beautiful tourist destination that offers stunning views of the Sahayadri ranges, a bird's eye view of the lights of Mumbai and chilly nights. At height of 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level, this serene place provides a cooling escape from searing temperatures. However, the most unique thing about it and what makes it so special, is that all vehicles are banned there.


Nearest airport is at Mumbai (100 km), while nearest railway station is at Neral (21 km). Getting to Matheran is one of highlights. A popular option is the leisurely two hour journey on the toy train from Neral.Trips from Matheran to Neral and back, take a thrilling 280 zigzag turns through the Sahayadri ranges, making it an exciting experience for all tourists. A number of boarding and lodging facilities are available in Matheran to cater to the huge inflow of tourists. Matheran's isolated location makes it relatively expensive to stay there. Cheaper rooms can be found near the toy train station, while secluded resorts are set back from the road amongst the forest.



Visitors are drawn to Matheran for its tranquility, fresh air, and old-world charm. In this place without vehicles, horses and hand pulled carts are the main forms of transport. Matheran is also blessed with dense forest, long walking tracks, and panoramic views. There are over 35 large and small viewpoints dotted around the hilltop.


All the look-out points of Matheran are worth a visit. Some of the best peaks and points in Matheran that offer the best views of the hill station are Panorama Point, King George Point, Louisa Point, Echo Point and the Charlotte Lake. The Paymaster Park and the Panthers Caves are also great places to visit for those wanting to witness wildlife.



The cliffs of Matheran can be enjoyed and viewed from the tops of restaurants and even through hotel rooms. One of the most eco-sensitive regions, Matheran is best explored on foot or on mountain bikes. Apart from the usual sightseeing, Matheran also offers activities such as hiking, trekking, climbing etc. Adventurous trekkers may go to Byron Garbutt point, Panorama Point.
